A Jaguar VIN compresses the essentials into 17 positions: lineage, engine, assembly site and model year. Whether you already own the car or are buying one, this tool deciphers the British code in a few clicks.
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), owned by Tata Motors since 2008, assigns its cars a strictly British WMI:
| WMI PREFIX | MANUFACTURER | COUNTRY |
|---|---|---|
| SAJ | Jaguar Cars Ltd | United Kingdom |
| SAL | Land Rover (same JLR group) | United Kingdom |
Positions 4–8 spell out the model (XE, XF, F-Type, F-PACE, E-PACE, I-PACE), body style (sedan, Sportbrake, coupé, convertible, SUV) and powertrain. Jaguar uses the Ingenium family (2.0 four-cylinder, 3.0 six-cylinder) and the legendary 5.0-litre supercharged AJ-V8 in SVR and R variants.
Key Jaguar engine families referenced in the VDS:
Ingenium 2.0 (four-cylinder petrol / diesel)
Ingenium 3.0 (six-cylinder)
AJ-V8 5.0 (supercharged V8 (SVR, R))
JLR's industrial footprint is centred on the UK, with an important Austrian exception.
Platforms, plants and powertrains.
| LINE | MODEL / PLATFORM | PLANT / NOTES |
|---|---|---|
| Sedans | XE (X760), XF (X260) | Castle Bromwich then Solihull; R / SVR use distinct VDS for AJ-V8 5.0 |
| SUVs | F-PACE (X761), E-PACE, I-PACE (I1) | F-PACE Solihull; E-PACE Halewood or Graz; I-PACE Magna Steyr Graz only |
| Grand tourer | F-Type (X152) | Castle Bromwich; 2.0 four-cylinder, 3.0 V6, 5.0 V8 supercharged; production ended 2024 |
| SVO | F-PACE SVR, F-Type SVR, XE SV Project 8 | Specific VDS; Warwickshire SVO Technical Centre may use a dedicated plant code |
The XE (X760) and XF (X260) were built at Castle Bromwich, then Solihull. R and SVR variants carry distinct VDS codes tied to the 5.0-litre supercharged V8.
The F-PACE (X761) comes from Solihull. The E-PACE is built at Halewood or Graz (Magna Steyr). The all-electric I-PACE (I1) is assembled exclusively by Magna Steyr in Graz.
Offered as coupé and convertible, the F-Type (X152) left Castle Bromwich with three power levels: 2.0 four-cylinder, 3.0 V6 and 5.0 supercharged V8. Production ended in 2024.
F-PACE SVR, F-Type SVR and the extreme XE SV Project 8 use specific VDS codes. The SVO Technical Centre in Warwickshire may be assigned a dedicated factory code.
Technology Pack, Comfort Pack, Black Pack and others — each bundles several items under an internal JLR code.
S, SE, HSE, R-Dynamic, SVR — each step is a predefined equipment set, reflected in the VDS area.
The JLR network retrieves the full factory configuration by entering the VIN in the technical portal.
Check jaguar.fr or a JLR dealer with your VIN. Campaigns are also published via RAPEX and the DGCCRF. For US-import vehicles, use nhtsa.gov.
