Keep in mind that if the vehicle has recently changed ownership or if its tax class has been updated as a result the displayed motor tax rate may no longer be accurate and could be subject to change.

Please also note that vehicles taxed on CO₂ emissions falling within Bands C to G (inclusive), and whose tax disc starts from 1 January 2021 onwards, have been affected by a motor tax rate increase. If your vehicle falls into one of these CO₂ bands, we recommend checking the motor tax renewal notice that was issued in December 2020 to confirm the correct amount payable. For every other vehicle category, the rates shown here remain fully applicable.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

What is Motor Tax in Ireland?

Motor Tax (Cáin Mhótair) is an annual tax that you must pay to drive your vehicle on public roads in Ireland. It is collected by the Department of Transport and your local Motor Tax Office, and the amount depends on the type of vehicle and either its CO₂ emissions or engine size.

How is the annual rate calculated?

Private cars registered on or after 1 July 2008 are taxed based on CO₂ emissions (bands A0 to G). Cars registered before that date are taxed based on engine capacity (cc). Goods vehicles are taxed by unladen weight, and electric vehicles benefit from the lowest band.

Can I pay every 3 or 6 months?

Yes. You can pay your motor tax annually, half-yearly (approx. 55.5% of the annual rate) or quarterly (approx. 28.25% of the annual rate). Paying annually is the cheapest option overall.

Where can I pay my motor tax?

You can renew online at motortax.ie using your PIN from the renewal notice (or your most recent tax disc), or in person at your local Motor Tax Office. A valid NCT certificate and insurance are required.

What documents do I need?

You typically need: your vehicle registration number, the PIN from your renewal reminder (RF100B) or VRC (logbook), valid insurance details, and a valid NCT certificate if your vehicle is more than 4 years old.
