Finding the VIN (Vehicle ID Number)
Every car carries a one-of-a-kind VIN stamped on its chassis, which identifies that exact vehicle.
Where to look for the VIN:
- Windscreen base – Visible through the windscreen on the driver’s side.
- Driver’s door pillar – On a plate or sticker in the driver’s door frame.
- Under the bonnet – Commonly found on the engine block.
- Spare wheel well – Some vehicles also carry the VIN here.
Make sure the VIN and engine number match the registration documents before you buy, to guard against fraud.
Legal Requirements
Even a car that looks and drives perfectly must satisfy the law to be road-legal:
- Proper registration – The car must be correctly registered.
- Safe to drive – It must satisfy safety and emissions standards.
