Frequently Asked Questions

Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) is a tax charged by the Irish Revenue when you register a vehicle in Ireland for the first time. The amount is based on the vehicle's Open Market Selling Price (OMSP), CO₂ emissions, and, in some cases, NOx emissions.
The NOx tax is calculated based on the nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions of the vehicle, measured in milligrams per kilometre. The calculation uses a rate that increases with higher emissions. Vehicles with low NOx emissions pay less, while older or more polluting models may face higher charges.
Yes. If you are importing a vehicle into Ireland from another country (including Northern Ireland, in most cases), you must pay VRT before you can legally register and use the vehicle on Irish roads. Certain exemptions or reliefs may apply in specific situations, such as transferring residence.
Our calculator provides an estimate based on the latest available Revenue rates and formulas. While we aim for the highest accuracy, the final amount may vary depending on the official inspection and valuation by the National Car Testing Service (NCTS) on behalf of Revenue.
You will typically need:
  • Proof of identity and address
  • Vehicle purchase invoice
  • Original foreign registration certificate (logbook)
  • Certificate of conformity (if available)
  • Proof of customs clearance (if applicable)
  • VRT booking confirmation

Additional documents may be requested depending on your specific case.
