The BMW VIN decoder analyzes your vehicle's 17-character identification number to reveal its factory specifications, series, production plant, options and year of manufacture.
Unlike a generic VIN, the first three characters of a BMW VIN (called the WMI — World Manufacturer Identifier) immediately reveal the division and country of manufacture. Here are the prefixes specific to the BMW universe:
| WMI PREFIX | DIVISION / BRAND | COUNTRY OF MANUFACTURE |
|---|---|---|
| WBA | BMW AG — Passenger Cars | Deutschland |
| WBS | BMW Motorsport GmbH (M range) | Deutschland |
| WBY | BMW i (Electric: i3, i4, iX…) | Deutschland |
| WBX | BMW / Magna Steyr | Austria (Graz) |
| WMW | MINI | UK / Netherlands |
| 4US / 5UX | BMW Manufacturing | USA (Spartanburg) |
| 5UM | U.S. Motorsport GmbH | USA |
| 3AV | BMW de Mexico | Mexiko |
| X4X | BMW Russia (Kaliningrad) | Russland |
| MMF | BMW Manufacturing Thailand | Thailand |
Characters 4 through 8 (VDS section) encode the series, body type, powertrain and transmission system. At BMW, these codes distinguish a rear-wheel-drive 320i from a 330i xDrive, or a sedan from a Touring. Engines follow BMW's internal nomenclature: N series (older combustion engines), B (current modular engines) and S (Motorsport — M3, M4, M5). Character 9 is a check digit and character 10 encodes the model year.
Engines follow BMW's internal nomenclature:
N (older combustion engines)
B (current modular engines)
S (Motorsport — M3, M4, M5)
The 11th character identifies the assembly plant. Knowing the plant helps verify VIN consistency and anticipate regionalised recall campaigns.
Each BMW range has its own VDS codes, dedicated factories and successive generations. Here is a summary to quickly identify your model.
| SERIES | CURRENT GENERATIONS | MAIN FACTORY |
|---|---|---|
| Series 1 | F20 / F40 / U06 | Leipzig, Regensburg |
| Series 2 | F22 / G42 (Coupé), F44 / U06 (GC) | Leipzig, Mexico |
| Series 3 | E46 / E90 / F30 / G20 / G50 | Munich |
| Series 4 | F32 / G22 | Dingolfing, Munich |
These models are primarily assembled in Dingolfing (Germany). The 5 Series (E60, F10, G30, G60) and the 7 Series (E65, F01, G11, G70) have distinct VDS codes for each generation. The 8 Series (G14/G15/G16) shares the CLAR platform with the 7 Series.
The X3 through X7 SUVs are manufactured in Spartanburg (USA) — their VIN begins with 5UX instead of WBA. This has a direct impact on recall campaigns (NHTSA for US VINs, RAPEX/DGCCRF for European VINs). The X1 and X2 are produced in Regensburg (Germany) with a standard WBA prefix.
BMW i electric models are distinguished by the WBY prefix instead of WBA. Engine codes use BMW's internal electric nomenclature. The i4 and i5 share the Series 4 and Series 5 platforms but with VDS codes specific to electric powertrains.
The WBS prefix immediately identifies a BMW Motorsport GmbH vehicle. Engines carry the S code (S58 for the M3/M4 G80/G82, S68 for the X5 M/X6 M). M models manufactured in the USA use the 5UM prefix.
BMW motorcycles follow the same 17-character VIN standard with the WB10 prefix (Motorrad, Germany). VDS codes vary by range: R 1250 GS, F 900 R, K 1600 GT, G 310 R, S 1000 RR. The VIN decoder works identically for motorcycles and cars.
Beyond the VIN, BMW uses three coding systems for factory options:
Each factory option has an alphanumeric code. For example, SA 2TB = BMW Live Cockpit Professional, SA 322 = adaptive cruise control, SA 4UR = laser headlights.
The complete list of all SA codes installed on a given vehicle. It is the build sheet of your BMW.
The complete vehicle order file, including options, paint (colour code) and interior trim. An advanced VIN decoder can extract this information directly from the VIN number.
BMW recall campaigns are identified by VIN. To check whether your vehicle is affected, visit the official portal bmw.fr/rappels and enter your VIN. For BMWs imported from the USA, use the NHTSA website (nhtsa.gov/recalls). In Europe, recalls are also referenced in the RAPEX system and the DGCCRF database.
A free VIN decoder reveals factory specifications (series, engine, plant, options). A paid history report goes further:
